America's wealth gap keeps growing, billionaires keep getting richer, and working-class Americans keep falling behind. So why do we keep voting for the politicians who protect the system?
Conservative politics is supposedly about preserving traditional values. But what exactly are conservatives trying to conserve? An economic system where the wealthiest Americans control a staggering percentage of the nation's wealth?
The Rich Get Richer While Americans Struggle
According to Federal Reserve data, the wealthiest 10% of Americans own approximately 88% of the stock market, while the richest 1% hold more total household wealth than the bottom 90% combined.
Meanwhile, CEO compensation has skyrocketed. In 1965, CEOs at major American corporations earned approximately 21 times what their workers made. Today, that ratio is roughly 325 to 1.
Worker productivity has increased dramatically over the past several decades, but wages haven't kept pace. The result? Growing income inequality and an economy that increasingly rewards ownership over labor.
Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Billionaire Political Influence
Elon Musk has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into American elections, including efforts supporting Donald Trump and Republican candidates.
Why are billionaires spending so much money influencing elections?
When wealthy individuals can fund political campaigns, lobby lawmakers, and benefit from favorable tax policies, it's reasonable to question whose interests our government actually serves.
Meanwhile, wealthy investors can benefit from unrealized capital gains and borrow against appreciating assets without immediately triggering capital gains taxes. Ordinary Americans rarely have access to those same financial advantages.
Are Culture Wars Distracting Us From the Wealth Gap?
While politicians focus public attention on immigration, abortion, transgender rights, and other divisive cultural issues, economic inequality continues to grow.
The question isn't whether Americans should have different political beliefs. It's whether we're paying enough attention to the economic policies affecting our everyday lives.
If voting for the same politicians hasn't improved your financial future, maybe it's time to try voting for something different.
